History

Like many companies in California, our business got its start in a garage when CEO Todd Harrison founded Titanium Metal Supply, Inc. in 2006. After steady growth, the company was moved to a facility in Mira Mesa, and two years later to a much larger facility in Poway, CA, which remains our current location.

In 2009, TMS Titanium earned both ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100C quality assurance certification. This elevated our status and qualified the company to begin supplying materials to a variety of well-known national aviation, space and defense organizations. Soon after, we expanded our focus to include many under-served industries, like auto racing. Our team quickly developed a passion for the sport and it wasn't long before this new passion led us to start our own racing program, along with providing sponsorship to many auto racing teams across the United States.

Keeping the momentum moving forward, we joined the International Titanium Association in 2014 and rebranded our company as TMS Titanium. TMS Titanium focuses on supplying titanium to a wide range of industries including aerospace, medical, and auto racing, as well as continuing our service to the commercial market.

Team

The TMS Titanium team is a dedicated group with years of experience in supplying and distributing titanium. Our number one goal is to provide the service and titanium you need, to keep your business moving forward.

  • Titanium is the only metal that combines extremely high strength and very light weight with outstanding heat and corrosion resistance
  • Titanium is the fourth most plentiful metal on Earth
  • Titanium won't corrode when exposed to harsh weather, grease or most chemicals
  • The natural blue patina that titanium develops over time actually adds to its rust resistance
  • There are 40,000 pounds of titanium on a Boeing 747
  • Golfers bought over 15 million pounds of titanium clubs this year

HISTORY

(Latin. titans, the first sons of the Earth, mythology)

Titanium was discovered by Gregor in 1791 and named by Klaproth in 1795. Nilson and Pettersson prepared impure titanium in 1887, however, the pure metal (99.9%) was not made until 1910 when Hunter heated TiCl4 with sodium in a steel bomb.

SOURCES

Titanium is present in the sun, in meteorites and can also be found in the crust of the earth, where it is the ninth most abundant element. Titanium is almost always present in igneous rocks and in the sediments derived from them. It occurs in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, and sphene, and is present in titanates and in many iron ores. Titanium is present in ash of coal, in plants, and in the human body.

PROPERTIES

Titanium has a low density, good strength, is easily fabricated, and has excellent corrosion resistance. When pure, it is a lustrous, white metal. When free of oxygen, it is ductile. Titanium burns in air and is the only element that burns in nitrogen. It is resistant to dilute sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, most organic acids, most chlorine gas, and chloride solutions.

Natural titanium is reported to become very radioactive after bombardment with deuterons. The emitted radiations are mostly positrons and hard gamma rays, and the metal is dimorphic. The hexagonal alpha form changes to the cubic beta form very slowly at about 880oC. The metal combines with oxygen at red heat, and with chlorine at 550oC.

Titanium metal is considered to be physiologically inert. When pure, titanium dioxide is relatively clear and has an extremely high index of refraction with an optical dispersion higher than diamond.

ISOTOPES & USES

Natural titanium consists of five isotopes with atomic masses from 46 to 50, all are stable. Eight other unstable isotopes are known. Titanium is important as an alloying agent with aluminum, molybdenum, manganese, iron, and other metals.

Alloys of titanium are principally used for aircraft and missiles where lightweight strength and ability to withstand extremes of temperature are important. Titanium is as strong as steel, but 45% lighter. It is 60% heavier than aluminum, but twice as strong.

Titanium has excellent resistance to seawater and for that reason, it is used for propeller shafts, rigging, and other parts of a ship that are exposed to the elements of the sea. It also has potential use in desalination plants, which convert seawater into fresh water. A titanium anode coated with platinum has been used to provide cathodic protection from corrosion by salt water.
